Underdogs Are Hungry Dogs, we appreciate this now.
One week ago today we were all watching the Superbowl.
Given the performance of our Eagles in the post-season and their dominant win over the Vikings, most of us had a good feeling. However, we realized that we would be wise to temper that “feeling” with a measure of humility, considering that the birds were facing a Superbowl dynasty, in Tom Brady, Bill Belichik and the New England Patriots.
Well, the Eagles won it. Through skill and grit, teamwork and leadership, they took home the trophy of trophies to the City of Brotherly Love. AMAZING!
I believe that I can speak for all Eagles fans and all inhabitants of the Delaware Valley – perhaps, most of the country – when I bring up the positive energy that has permeated our society, courtesy this game. Spirits have been high, not merely because our favorite team won the Superbowl…there is a bigger story here, an underdog story, akin to David and Goliath.
We have all seen these video compilations, of the game itself and the Eagles parade. We have seen key play highlight reels and sideline exchanges, between players and coaches. All of this has been incredibly inspiring.
Of course, the power of one particular speech reverberates through the streets of Philly, long after the crowds have departed and hang-overs have worn off: the dialogue of Eagles center, Jason Kelce. His rant was next-level, halting in progress the momentum of the proceedings on the steps of the Art Museum; shushing crowds of their raucous merriment; causing beers to be lowered from the lips of the collective audience. This throat-shattering message from a gridiron brute penetrated the hearts of every person who leaned in. It has been a long time since an individual spoke with such meaning and passion from those steps…about the role of the underdog.
To me, Kelce’s message encapsulated exactly what the history of Philadelphia, our Founding Fathers, and the Movie Rocky has been all about: NOT QUITTING! MOVING FORWARD!
When times are tough and the chips are down, we must work hard, suck it up and drive on. Believe in ourselves and our team. Embracing the underdog status, this is the foundation upon which our dreams may be built.
Damn the haters. GO EAGLES! GO PHILLY!
